Nothing is Impossible Under the Sun brings together material from over two years working with refugees and migrants in Calais. Sound recordings, conversation transcripts, found snapshots, moving image, drawings and closely observed photographs were gathered or made and have formed a book, exhibition and video work. Rejecting neat linear narratives the work is edited in such a way to evoke disorientation, mirroring the physical and psychological spaces to which people without documents are consigned.
I was acutely aware that these are sites in which cameras are often used to oppress, misrepresent and expose, but also where migrants use photographs to communicate and remember home. With this in mind I sought to use the camera in ways that felt generative, inviting participation in whichever ways people felt comfortable. Issues of ethics, and authorship are acknowledged, the impossibility of these issues being completely resolved is accepted and becomes a visible and inherent aspect of the work itself.
The project resulted in a book (published by SOAP).
It has been exhibited at CCA Celje (Slovenia), Breadfield Malmo, Magnum Print Room, 16 Nicholson Street, Brewery Tap Folkestone and The Ditch Shoreditch. Most recently, a multi screen video piece was exhibited alongside the book as part of Photographers Gallery New Talent.
