*** Showing at The Stove, Dumfries 10th-21st May ***
This publication contains work made by prisoners at HMP Dumfries in response to photographs from the Dumfries and Galloway Libraries Image Archive. The only two images in the archive that specifically relate to the prison are reproduced unaltered in the front and back of the booklet. Each shows the view out into Dumfries from the prison tower.
Participants re-framed archive images according to the elements they found important or interesting. Throughout this process and the resulting conversations individuals shared their experiences and knowledge, while reflecting on their relationship to the places pictured in the photographs, and on memories of more distant locations.
The results are interspersed with photographs taken by me during the workshops, where prisoners considered how they might put themselves in the frame. The project reflects on the prison and its inhabitants as both part of and separated from the surrounding town.
Many thanks to staff at HMP Dumfries, Fife College and Dumfries and Galloway Libraries for their support with this project. All archive images are courtesy of Dumfries and Galloway Libraries and Archives, For more information about the archive visit viewdumfriesandgalloway.co.uk
