Loose Parts | Abbeyhill Primary School | 2019

As Artist in Residence at Abbeyhill Primary School I was invited to respond to the ‘Loose Parts’ that had newly arrived in the playground. These are ordinary objects that children can reconfigure in hundreds of ways, constructing their own play environment.

I began by photographing the way the children use the space and the Loose Parts objects within it, becoming particularly interested in the game of hide and seek. Images created by myself and the children during the residency were printed on postcards and hidden around the school. When children and staff found a postcard they were invited to answer the question on the back. The photographs themselves became ‘loose parts’, to be endlessly rearranged and given new meanings.

The work was displayed during the Colony of Artists weekend in September 2019.
