The Bridge and the Fort | Medway Fellowship | UCA Rochester 2014

During this three month residency I collaborated with the Royal Engineers Archive, the Rochester Bridge Trust and Kaymac Marine Engineering to produce a piece that brought together varied material to reflect on Rochester Bridge as a symbol of connection and separation in the history of the place. The piece was exhibited at the Zandra Rhodes Gallery in Rochester and Free Range in London. (Image courtesy of the Royal Engineers Museum Archive)

‘With respect to the relation “separateness-unification” the bridge emphasizes the latter, and it makes obvious the distance between its resting points and makes it measurable. By so doing, it also overcomes this distance at the same time. The door, however, in a stricter and more obvious manner demonstrates that the acts of separating and relating are but two sides of the same act.’
